ELECTIONS
Your new BWS officers have been elected, and it is a pleasure to announce that they are:
Nancy Davis Metz, President
Jeanne Ellen Dutton, 1st Vice President
Shelly Ritter, 2nd Vice President
Returning officers, to whom we are very grateful, are:
Carol Rhodes, Treasurer
Jo Weddell, Secretary
Committees will be announced in January by Nancy, and anyone who is interested in serving on a committee, please let her know.
We could use a couple people for a clean-up committee after the meetings. It only takes a few minutes, but it's an important detail to leave the church as sparkling as we find it - that way, we know we will be welcome!

ACCOLADES and KUDOS

Gillian Harris' watercolor of Goldenseal, "Hydrastis canadensis" (a native woodland plant) has just been accepted into the American Society of Botanical Artists' travelling exhibit titled "Losing Paradise? Endangered Plants Here and Around the World." The exhibition will open at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis October 2009, then will go to Chicago, New York, The Smithsonian, and California.

Several BWS members exhibited at the Brown County Art Guild "Senior Show," including Jacki Frey and Bob Thrasher.

Bob also had a painting in the membership show in June which was a winter scene of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Bob printed some cards from this painting and sent them to his daughter whose husband teaches at Gonzaga. The cards are now being sold at an interior decorating shop in Spokane.

The Indiana Artists Club has an membership exhibit at the Columbus Learning Center located at 4555 Central Ave, Columbus. Take the opportunity to visit this facility and view the show before it ends on January 9; you will be very impressed with the building as well as the artwork.
Connie Brorson won a merit award of $100; and Jacki Frey, Tricia Wente and Jean Vietor also displayed their work. The following images are works in order by these artists. (Thanks to Susan Blunck for the photos...and we apologize for the glare from the extensive wall of glass!)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS
T'is the season to be jolly, for sure! It's also a time to reflect on our blessings of friends and family, a time to be grateful for the God-given talents we, as artists, are so fortunate to have. I wish you all the very best of holidays, full of happiness and joy, and extend my heartfelt thanks to every single officer, committee chair, and member who has made this such a successful year for BWS, and an incredibly fulfilling year for me, your out-going president.

Fondly,
Jeanne

TWINROCKER FIELD TRIP
The weather was beautiful for a trip to Brookston, Indiana. We were greeted by Kathryn Clark, owner, who gave us the grand tour with an extensive explanation of the many aspects of papermaking.
Fibers are pounded using a Hollander beater, then added to water to create pulp. Using a gigantic blender, pigment is added to the pulp to create a variety of green, gold, pink and blue papers. Dyes are vegetable based and are fugitive, meaning they fade over time, but pigments are permanent.
Kathryn, elbow deep in a huge vat of pulp, demonstrated how to hand dip a screen, "breaking the wave" of water off the pulp to determine the weight and thickness, and then layering the paper to dry.
Kathryn is also an accomplished watercolor artist, and shared many examples of her art which was done on her handmade paper.
This tour was a great opportunity as Twinrocker hand-makes about 200 pieces of paper every day and is the only paper mill in America making paper by hand.
We all purchased quantities of their top quality paper in a variety of shapes and sizes, and a sampler will be available for viewing at the November meeting. Their website includes a history of the company and orders may be placed at http://www.twinrocker.com/
Thanks to Kathy Karnes for this photo of Kathryn in front of the shop, and the photo of Kathryn with Carol Rhodes in the workshop!

After the tour, we enjoyed lunch at Klein Brot Haus, a bakery next door to Twinrocker, and were pleased to have Marilyn Martin, the original organizer of BWS, join us. On the way home, we were privileged to view the incredible colors of autumn with the sun setting through the golden leaves. A fine time was had by all.

Below is a photo, compliments of Jacki Frey, taken through the window this past Wednesday at the paint out. Bob Talbot graciously invited us to their cabin, and wife Sue cooked up a pot of delicious chicken chili for us. It was misty, the fog was gently rising up over the pond, and the glorious colors of autumn reflected in the still water. Those who came to paint had a nice time, hiking in the rain under a canopy of trees, then warming up by the wood stove. A hearty thanks to Bob and Sue for their hospitality and providing such an incredible setting for our paint out.

The theme explores the myriad connections of their lives, their bodies, and their work."

    Judi Betts Watercolor Workshop

Fourteen people attended the five day watercolor workshop the first week of August...and, boy! did we all have a great time! Judi is an excellent instructor and a peach of a gal, and brought all kinds of new ideas to the students. An added bonus for her, and for us, was that Judi and her twin sister went to IU, and Judi met her husband while they were students. So, in many ways, Judi felt right at home.

Here are a couple pictures of her as she critiques our paintings from the week, and as she opens the thank you gift we gave her - a copy of the Bloomington Sketchbook which featured paintings by several BWS members. Those in attendance at the workshop autographed their pages and Judi was thrilled!

    BRUSHSTROKES

Summer Edition, 2008It's been a busy, busy summer for BWS and its members! The main event, our membership show at Gallery North on the Square during the month of July, was very well received. Over three hundred people attended the opening reception, and one painting of Cathy Korinek's, "What to Do with Three Boys and a Boat," was sold. Congratulations to Cathy.

Kudos to Tricia Wente, show coordinator, and Nancy Metz, reception chair, for an excellent job putting it all together. Many members offered ideas, brought refreshments, and worked the night of the opening reception. Your enthusiastic participation is what makes BWS such a great organization. A huge THANK YOU to everyone!

Alice Sharp, our activities chair, organized several events for us, and at some delightful spots perfect for painting.
In May, a paint out at Stone Head on SR 135 south of Nashville was featured on the front page of the Brown County Democrat. Thanks to reporter Mike Kelley for the beautiful photo of Alice, an artist at work. View the story and photo at http://www.browncountyindiana.com/main.asp?SectionID=7&SubSectionID=7&ArticleID=11418

The photo below was taken at Cheryl Duckworth's Flower Farm by Tricia Wente. A light rain had washed everything to a sparkling clean, the sun came out from behind the few remaining clouds, and the wildlife and flowers were sitting pretty, just waiting for us plein aire painters! Thanks a bunch to Cheryl for allowing us to visit her beautiful gardens again this year.

Our next venture was to the Mease Farm on Loesch Road, west of Bloomington, on July 13. There, we were visited by a rooster (saved from a rather nasty fate by the current tenants), and a mother cat and her kittens who spent most of the day climbing in and out of paint boxes, carriers, and easels. Alice captured the creatures below with her camera. The next door neighbor came over to say hello, then invited us to a wonderful lunch, right out of her garden. She was so taken with BWS that she signed up on the spot and invited us to a paint out at her farm next summer. Welcome to our newest member, Shell Ritter!

The schedule of remaining paint outs includes September 13 at the T.C. Steele home (details at www.tcsteele.org/); September 27 at Musgrave Orchard; Wednesday, October 8 at the 1800s Talbot cabins; and our end of summer get together and paint out on Sunday, October 26 at Oliver Winery. Watch your email for more information as the events draw nearer.

Tricia Wente, shown at right, created a beautiful portrait of Jill Behrman, in Jill's memory, for Jill's House. This facility was built with love by the community and will serve a much needed purpose, that of providing housing to people who are here in Bloomington for medical treatment. For more information and photos of the grand opening, please go to http://www.jills-house.org/

Jane Jensen was honored with a permanent exhibit at the new IU Credit Union. The IUCU purchased a collection of Jane's paintings and they will be displayed at the IU Memorial Credit Union. Stop by when you are on campus to get a look at this outstanding exhibit.

Jeanne Iler won second and third places in the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce's cover design contest.

Connie Brorson received a purchase award at the Napannee Spring Into Art Fair. She also will exhibit at the Jasper (Indiana) 15th Annual Art Show. This exhibit takes place in September at the Krempp Gallery, and details may be obtained at http://www.jasperindiana.gov/pages.cfm?departmentid=131#3754

    ART for ALL SEASONS
The Art for All Seasons juried show, sponsored by the Sycamore Land Trust and Gallery North on the Square, offered BWS members an opportunity to be included in a project that works to conserve our vanishing landscapes. We are pleased to announce First and Second place winners are BWS members! Congratulations to Gillian Harris for her first place win, Gleanings, Beanblossom Bottoms, an amazingly intricate botanical drawing, and Lisa Tipton for her Second Place winner, a watercolor titled Indiana Boardwalk. Lisa's painting was also one of two "signature" images used in the advertising of the exhibit. Jeanne Iler's watercolor, Hawk - the Big Catch, received the Prairie Partner Barbara Restle Award.
Gillian also received a special invitation to exhibit her second botanical drawing, Houses, Beanblossom Bottoms, an honor extended to only five entries.
Several BWS members were juried into the show including Tricia Wente, Sammye Smith, Sara Steffey-McQueen, Cathy Korinek, Donna Kluesner, Linda Meyer-Wright, Carolyn Rogers-Richard, Jacki Frey, and Jeanne Ellen Dutton.
The exhibit moves to Stillframes in Columbus, and the French Lick Resort and Casino in September.
Artist-signed copies of the AFAS calendar are available at Gallery North for $14.95 plus tax (total $16.00). The calendar features works by several BWS members, and individual pages can be framed.
The AFAS exhibit is open through August 29, Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gallery North, 116 W Sixth Street in Bloomington.

    Paint Out June 25th

A mid-week Paint Out is planned for Wednesday, June 25th at the Duckworth Flower Farm from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Bring a sack lunch and your painting/sketching supplies and spend the day in the rolling hills east of Bloomington. You'll enjoy painting in the colorful gardens of Cheryl Duckworth, of the Bloomington Farmer's Market. Painters of all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Driving Directions: Take third street East, past the mall, pass Smith Road, and then pass the old Ryans Steak house.  On the right you will see a sign that says 446 to Lake Monroe.  Century Suites is on the right.  Take a right on 446.  One mile up 446 is a flashing blinker light.  There is a church on the left.  Take a left at the blinker light.  This is Lampkins Ridge Road.  Lampkins Ridge is very winding.  It is only 4 miles long, but seems longer!  Stay on this road.  There is a small road that veers off to the left, about half way, but it is gravel.  Just stay on the main paved road.  When you are almost there you will go down a long hill.  As you go down the hill, the house is on the left.  It is a Red Brick Ranch, in the middle of 8 acres, and surrounded by a lot of white pines.  The address on the mailbox is 7807. Please park anywhere!  Alongside the polebarn is fine, it is closest to the main garden.
