Sample watercolor mediums at April meeting
Johannah Silva, an artist and art educator working in Winsor & Newton’s Artist Outreach Program, will be doing a demonstration on Winsor & Newton’s Watercolors  Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m.  Topics will include a short history of pigments, characteristics of color, watercolor mediums and brushes.  Attendees will receive free paint samples as well as informative literature.  The hands-on component of the demo will include sampling some of the mediums.  Bring some watercolor paper, brushes and a palette.  Ms. Silva’s work can be viewed at her website,  www.johannahsilva.com .

Judy Moore Mudd demonstrates how she chooses which colors will
create the best flesh tone for each portrait. She often works from photos
saved
on her iPad.

Show and share your paintings
from the portrait workshop
If you attended Judy Moore Mudd’s “Portraits in Watercolor” workshop last weekend, bring your painting to the April meeting. It will be a great opportunity to share a little of what you learned about portraits.

Judy combined demos, handouts and individual instruction to help even the complete novice portrait painter produce a respectable piece. If everyone shares just one newly learned technique or piece of advice, everyone can benefit from the workshop.

Spring cleaning?
Donate art supplies to Henryville schools
BWS will be collecting new and gently used art supplies for the Henryville schools affected by the March 2 tornado. Take your donations to the City Hall Atrium, 401 N. Morton St., Wednesday, April 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. or Saturday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Specific needs include: black construction paper, colored pencils, oil and tempera paints, brushes, canvases, drawing pencils, erasers, sketchbooks, printmaking materials, glue, rubber cement and ceramics materials.

“The Bloomington Arts Commission is delighted to help make the Showers Atrium available to help facilitate this important community effort," said Scott Jones, BAC chair. "We’re hopeful that providing needed supplies to displaced students will help them resume their arts education.”

Henryville’s schools remains closed. Temporary elementary classrooms have been setup in a nearby church in New Albany, and high school students returned to their studies just this week in a temporary facility in Scottsburg.

For more information on the Henryville Arts Supply Collection efforts, contact Miah Michaelsen, Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts, at michaelm@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3534 or Kriste Lindberg, Bloomington Watercolor Society at kriste.lindberg@gmail.com.

BWS to present first Art Scholarship in 2013
BWS members approved last month a BWS Art Scholarship to be presented to an MCCSC graduating senior who is pursuing a degree in visual fine arts, arts education, architecture or design from an accredited college, university, or school of design.

The $300 scholarship is to be used  to purchase art supplies necessary for the curriculum for which he or she is enrolled.

The Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools will administer the annual scholarship program. Donor cards will be distributed at the April meeting.
