“We Paint … the Springs”
early bird registration nears
By now you should have received a flier in the mail announcing the details of the program and registration. If you didn’t receive the mailing (or can’t put your hands on it when you need it), go to www.bloomingtonwatercolor.org/conference. From that site, you can download a registration form that you can complete and mail in. Or you can call Ivy Tech’s Center for Lifelong Learning at 812-330-6041.

Register before April 15 and pay the discounted registration fee of $179 for the full conference. This includes a full day of educational sessions on Saturday, the Sunday paint out, two social hours, one breakfast and two lunches. After April 15 the full-conference registration fee will be $199.

To register for Saturday only, the early bird registration fee is $169 and includes a full day of educational sessions, one social hour, one breakfast and one lunch. After April 15 the one-day registration will cost $179.

The Sunday paint out registration is $40 and includes lunch.

We need all BWS members planning to attend the conference to register by April 15. We negotiated a no-penalty cancellation date to protect BWS from financial risk, and that means we will have to decide based on the early-bird registrations whether to cancel the event. Registrations are coming in, but we can’t make the minimum without our own members!

Want believable people in your paintings?
The March 12 BWS meeting will feature Betty Wagoner leading a session on painting gesture and action in the human figure. She will provide photos of people walking, running, leaning and reclining. The group will first do simple sketches observing the skeletal position, center of gravity and direction of the action.  Then, members will paint the sketches following the lines and structure of the sketch.  If time allows, members will paint quick gestural paintings without sketching. The work produced will be primarily tonal, impressionistic paintings and sketches.

Bring a sketch pencil, a few pieces of watercolor paper and sketch paper, a few colors of paint, brushes and a water container.  We will produce primarily tonal, impressionistic paintings and sketches.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the First Christian Church on the corner of Kirkwood and Washington.

The program will start after a brief business meeting.

Members to vote on scholarship proposal
The scholarship committee has put together a plan to award a $300 scholarship to a Bloomington North or Bloomington South senior who has been accepted into an accredited college or university. The recipient must be enrolled in fine arts, art education, architecture or design and must use the $300 for art supplies.

The scholarship would be awarded through the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools. The initial $300 would come from the BWS treasury; however, individuals could make tax-deductible donations to the fund through the Foundation.

The Executive Board has approved the scholarship, and the next step is a membership vote at the March 12 meeting.  President Jeanne Dutton emailed BWS members announcing that the proposal would be voted on next Monday and asking members to review the full proposal, which was sent as an email attachment. To review the proposal before the meeting, check your inbox for Jeanne’s March 5 email.

The scholarship committee members are Jo Weddle, retired educator; Sara Steffey McQueen, art teacher; and Vi Working, retired art teacher.

BWS Signature Status application process
begins this month
Every two years, the Bloomington Watercolor Society reviews BWS member applicants for Signature Member status.  Signature Member status is achieved by meeting a set of guidelines and submitting paintings to a jury process.

What are the advantages of BWS Signature Membership?  Signature members have the opportunity to sell their works in Signature Member status at all membership shows.  They will be invited to display their paintings in special exhibits.  Signature members are entitled to use the initials “BWS” after their names.  Fees for entering paintings in a BWS show are waived.

The application process begins this year in March and ends in May.  Member applicants must indicate their intent to apply by April 30 and submit an application, resume and paintings for review on May 11.  A Jury of Selection will judge the applications. This year, the jury consists of the BWS 2nd vice president and two current BWS Signature Members, plus a guest judge who is a professional artist. The new Signature Members will be announced in June.

BWS members are encouraged to apply.  Applications and guidelines will be available at the March 12 BWS meeting or can be found online at http://bloomingtonwatercolor.org/about.htm or http://www.bloomingtonwatercolor.org/ and clicking “About.”

Applicants can indicate their intent to apply to a member of the selection committee: Betty Wagoner, 2nd Vice President, Tricia Wente, BWS, and Bob Burris, BWS.  All can be reached at the March or April BWS meeting or contact Betty at blw89@yahoo.com at or 812-323-8954.
