Call for Submissions: The Art of Chocolate

Dan Alexander, 2nd vice president of BWS, sends this request to the BWS artists:

The "Week of Chocolate" takes place January 30-February 6, 2010. The "Week of Chocolate" is a fundraiser for Options for Better Living, an organization which provides services for people with disabilities. (www.optionsfbl.com)

As part of the fundraising, the Art of Chocolate event takes place on Sunday, January 31, 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Indiana University Art Museum. This is an evening of fine food, desserts, drink, music, and a silent auction.

BWS members are invited to donate a matted or framed painting in any medium to the silent auction. It is a real opportunity for BWS artists to exhibit their work at the Art Museum and be viewed by the many guests who attend.

Dan may be reached at 360-2860 or at beetlegraphix@hotmail.com.

Guests in Attendance:
Bob East, Beth Van Karst Gray, Rob Hanrahan, Bess Lee, Sharon Parsons, Deborah Rush, Vesta Seville, Michelle Talbot.

The meeting was called to order at 6:18 p.m. at the First Christian Church with Joanne Weddle, President, presiding. Joanne called the meeting to order using the new gavel and block that is a recent gift to the watercolor society from Susan Blunck.

Joanne thanked those who had provided the refreshments.

The minutes of the last meeting (November 9, 2009) were available on the Blog and no additions or corrections were found from the members in attendance. That being the case, Cathy Korinek proposed they be approved and Jeanne Dutton seconded the motion. The members approved unanimously.

The Treasurer, Carol Rhodes, distributed the year end 2009 Financial report and the Treasurer's Report for January. These reports were accepted by the members based on a motion by Meri Reinhold and second by Dee Rockwood.

Joanne provided a handout showing the officers and committee chairman along with their email addresses. The members were requested to take the handout home and to be an active participant in the committees and the activities of the Bloomington Watercolor Society.

Joanne also requested that all members in attendance fill in a form with suggestions on programs that members would like to attend and paint-out sites that we could go to. The goal is to be able to let the membership know, by next meeting, what the calendar of activities for the year is.

Joanne gave the floor over to Rob Hanrahan, the Executive Director of the Bloomington Area Arts Council (BAAC). Rob thanked the BWS for its work to create a Christmas Tree for sale and said that he hoped the BWS would participate next year in this fund raiser for the BAAC. Rob wanted the BWS to know that the BAAC and the Waldron are not defunct and that BAAC is looking for input and help from the artist community. The BAAC needs to raise money and is aimed at that activity near term. For more information about the BAAC and Waldron it was suggested that members look at press releases on the web site
www.artlives.org.

Bob Talbot made a motion that BWS, as an organization, join BAAC. Tricia Wente seconded. Discussion occured, and it was decided to table the proposal until the February meeting.

Joanne provided a hand-out giving information about art shows that members are participating in and opportunities available for art education.

Tricia Wente described the current membership show that BWS has at the Columbus Learning Center. Tricia asked members to distribute show cards to make the public aware that the show is going on and the art may be seen between now and August. She thanked the team of Kriste Lindberg, Nancy Metz, and Jeanne Dutton that helped transport and hang the art on January 5th. The membership showed their appreciation of Tricia's efforts with loud applause.

Old Business:

BWS rack cards were distributed to members for use in expanding the membership.

Meri Reinhold provided written and spoken information about the BWS note card project. The costs have been estimated and they seem to allow for a reasonable profit per set of note cards assuming they can be sold at around $10 a set. There are a number of decisions to be made yet and the membership decided that the final decisions will be part of the agenda for the February meeting.

New Business:
Dan Alexander made a request that members contribute art to the Week of Chocolate celebration that is a fundraiser for Options which is an organization that provides assistance programs to those with disabilities. Dan is the contact if any of the members have art that they would like to offer. For more information see Dan's post following this blog entry.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:12 p.m. and attention was transfered to the evening's speaker, Vesta Seville, who provided a lesson on two point prospective.

Respectfully submitted,
Charlotte Griffin
BWS Secretary, 2010
