BRUSHSTROKES

April 2010
DATES and UPDATES
Monday, April 12
6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Monthly Meeting
After a short business meeting, BWS’ own Carol Rhodes will present an workshop about color. Check out the supply list below (it’s a simple one!).
“Managing Color to Create Better Art”
Creating color unity in your painting is critical in establishing its mood; however, making a decision about which colors to select is certain to be perplexing for most of us, especially as we start out in our art careers. In this demonstration, you will learn:
1, how color vision works in our brains, which in turn affects how we react to color combinations;
2, how art schools usually train students to select color schemes; and
3, how the chemistry of pigments affects the colors we see and the way paint behaves.”

We will discuss saturation, tonality, key, and purity of colors. Then, you will get a chance to directly experiment with the six-color palette that is recommended by many contemporary artists and color experts, including the Wilcox School of Color. We’ll blend primaries into “cool” and “warm” (or biased) shades that help to unite your painting scheme. As we do so, we will discuss how to shade objects, paint cast shadows, create distances, and more.
Supplies: Bring your favorite size 6-to-12 paint brush, a few scraps of watercolor paper (several types would be helpful), and a spray bottle.
For the demonstration, you will be furnished with your own simple, ceramic palette pre-loaded with 6 dabs of watercolor paint - this will be yours to take home.
(To offset the costs of supplies, a $1-$2 donation would be greatly appreciated!)

This workshop is presented by Carol Rhodes, a computer graphic design instructor and training materials developer for Indiana University, and graphic designer for local organizations. She has taught graphic design and Photoshop classes for the past 14 years, including Electronic Publishing for IU School of Journalism; Photoshop for IU School of Education; Visualizing Your Art Electronically, for IU Continuing Studies; Photoshop and Scanning for IU Continuing Studies; and Digital Photos with Picasa and Elements, for IU Continuing Studies. Her special painting interests are animals, nature, and some architectural pieces.

Sandy will demonstrate how to achieve great results, whether you paint realistically or abstractly. You'll learn how to control the paint on this slippery surface by using various unique tools and materials while painting from your own choice of subject matter. ON EXHIBIT
Tweet-A-Rama! Linda Meyer-Wright offers an avian frenzy of a show at Gallery North on the Square during the month of April. Linda reports, “All birds all the time. Not a normal bird in the flock ... I call them Mind Birds or Word Birds or Birds of Pray. Some are watercolor, some are mixed media. They are on paper, canvas, wood. Various sizes - many of them are small (5x5) and cheep-cheep. They can hang on the wall, or perch on a shelf or desk. Does having birds on my mind make me a bird brain?” (Note: This editor refuses to answer that question, Linda!)

KUDOS
Kriste Lindberg and Bob Vandeventer worked with Aurora Alternative High School and the B’ton Environmental Commission to create a mural depicting drainage above and below ground – natural (cave) and manmade (storm sewer) systems – and related karst education. The mural, located at the Banneker Community Center, measures 11x4 feet.
Bloomington’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Commission provided the fund to purchase zero-low VOC paint and supplies from local merchants. Also supporting Kriste and Bob’s efforts were Bloomington Parks and Recreation, City of Bloomington Utilities Department, and the Indiana Karst Conservancy (thanks, in part, to funds from a National Speleological Foundation grant) and Walnut Grove Spring Water.
