Brushstrokes
December 2012

From the president
We just received this note from Sara Neeley, Executive Director, Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools.

"Your scholarship is so very special!  Thanks!  Best wishes in 2013."

I hope each of you will consider making an end-of-the-year contribution to the BWS Art Scholarship.  Checks may be sent to FMCCS, 315 North Drive, Bloomington, IN  47401.  Contributions may also be made on line at www.mccsfoundation.org.  Be sure to designate it to the BWS scholarship.  The first scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2013, just a few months away.

Please understand how much I appreciate your support; it's one of our best BWS ventures ever!

Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful holiday and the absolute best in 2013!"

We Paint … the Springs & other things
At least two paintings from the November We Paint … the Springs & Other Things show at City Hall have sold. Tricia Wente, BWS show chair, thanks all who entered their paintings plus all the member supporters for writing and delivering publicity, volunteering for take in and take down, distributing show cards and posters, creating great food to share for the reception and coordinating the beautiful table,  and acting as our important Saturday show monitors.

Looking for a holiday gift for yourself or a BWS friend?
You can purchase a white and blue BWS tote bag for $6. It’s ideal for carrying painting supplies to meetings and paint outs. Contact Jeanne Dutton at jeanne.dutton@att.net.

Jan Britton, Kriste Lindberg and
Jo Weddle
Indiana Watercolorists Travel to Italy
by Jan Britton, Kriste Lindberg, and Jo Weddle

November 8 – 18 found Jan, Kriste, and Jo enjoying  beautiful (bella) southern Italy along with about 29 fellow artists from across the country (including two more from Indiana!) and various other parts of the world, thanks to trip organizer, Charles Gruppe. We stayed at a hotel in Sorrento for the duration and took occasional trips to nearby Pompeii, the island of Capri, and points along the Amalfi coast, including Amalfi and Positano.  This gave us the ability to concentrate more on our painting rather than packing!

Anyplace can be a studio as
shown by Kriste's setup at
Marina Grande.

Amalfi Coast

The region is steeped in beauty – rocky cliffs, shorelines, architecture, and of course the people.  It was good to take it in – and go offline for a while.
There was just something about the lighting, too. It was truly magical to watch it change throughout the day.

Jan and Jo kept busy taking photos with their new iPads. Together, they must have taken over 1,000!
One of Kriste’s favorite pastimes was wandering through the squares, parks, and walkways over to Marina Grande with new friends and sitting on a rock wall while painting the surrounding cliffs, buildings, water, and boats in her journal. There was a strong wind one day and a few clouds so our little group was treated to a nice show across the bay as white caps and patches of light illuminated Mt. Vesuvius.

The trip culminated in a show of works completed during our 10 days there. It was held on the glass-enclosed roof, which had a 360-degree view of the hills in the background and bay in the front; we thought it rather fitting that a rainbow came out during this time, our last day.
We will bring our favorite pieces to share at the next meeting!
