The BWS meeting is Monday, March 12, 6:00 p.m.
NOTE THE LOCATION CHANGE!!
We are back at the Monroe County Library and in for a treat!

For minutes of the February 12 meeting, see Comments, below.

Pygmalion’s, art supply store and much more, is sponsoring a program about art supplies. Tom and Jane from Pygmalion's will be joined by Ed Brickler, a representative of Canson Papers which also distributes Arches paper. Mr. Brickler will discuss the ranges of paper surfaces and weights and how paint works on each surface and introduce many of us to Ampersand Clayboard. In addition, Tom and Jane will present information about other materials and supplies, including Yupo, Fredericks watercolor canvas, and frosted Mylar.
Jane will also do a segment on watercolor crayons and pencils.

This will be a hands-on program with opportunities for BWS members to try out the materials. Samples will also be provided by Pygmalion’s and Canson. This looks to be a most informative program you won’t want to miss.

Minutes
Bloomington Watercolor Society
February 12, 2007

The meeting was called to order by president Tricia Wente at 6:15 p.m. at the First Christian Church. She welcomed new members Susan Webb, Bonnie Gordon-Lucas, Johnnie Belinda and Sammy Smith, as well as two guests, Shing Wen and Julie Smith, a reporter for Cultureweek. Tricia also thanked Jo Weddle for her efforts in securing the meeting room and baking homemade Valentine cookies.

Attendees: Tina Allgood, Connie Brorson, Jeanne Dutton, Jodi Estell, Jacki Frey, Jeanne Iler, Steve Jackson, Carol Rhodes, Tricia Wente, James Yang, JoAnn Weddle.

Treasurer’s report:
Treasurer Carol Rhodes reports that, as of the current date, the balance in the BWS account is $929.48.

Meeting Minutes
The minutes of the last meeting, which took place on January 8, 2007 were read by secretary Jeanne Dutton. A motion was made and seconded, and the minutes were approved as read.

Old Business:
1. Tricia commented on the Monroe Bank show, saying that the art was beautiful, the food was great, and the estimated attendance at the reception on January 25 was about 150. A very successful event!

2. The Baker Place suite open house, which was attended by the Board and other members, is a beautiful venue for displaying our art work. A 20% commission on sales will go to the John Waldron Art Center as they are responsible for accepting and hanging all displayed work. Currently, a hanging system is being investigated by the owners and, once that is in place, we will hear from JWAC.
Tricia asked that any BWS members who are interested in participating in this opportunity indicate that interest by signing up with her. Rotation will occur every two months and JWAC will contact us if sales occur.
BWS can participate as a group, but participation by individual members is optional. A motion to participate as a group was made by Steve Jackson, seconded by Jeanne Dutton, and passed by majority vote.

NEW BUSINESS:
1. Jacki Frey presented information about the annual spring workshop. Jeanne McLeish will be the instructor. Jacki suggested we split the workshop into three segments. The initial session to be inside with demonstration; the second part to be en plein air, perhaps at Sample Gate; and the third segment to be held back inside for critique by the instructor. June 2 was the date chosen.

2. Jacki also provided information on a possible five day workshop in 2008 which BWS would host. Judi Betts is a nationally known artist and very experienced presenter. The estimated cost per person is $375. It would be held Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Since Judi is so well-known, Jacki predicted we would draw people from several mid-west watercolor groups, including Watercolor Society of Indiana, the Indiana Artists Club, Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, et al. A minimum number of 17 people is needed, and cancellation is 30 days prior to the workshop.

3. Tricia brought up the subject of a group membership at the Brown County Art Gallery. Jeanne Iler encouraged the idea, saying it is a nice venue and, as a member group, both rooms would be available for a show. Carol Rhodes made a motion that BWS become a group member and Tricia seconded the motion, which was passed. Tricia will follow up with necessary action.

4. Jacki discussed the possibility of BWS buying a Mylar mirror, which would be used for instruction purposes. The price is $355 if we purchase before February 17. Connie Brorson moved to purchase, seconded by Jodi Estell.

5. March 12 is our next meeting at the Monroe County Library.

6. Minutes will be distributed by email shortly after the meeting, and Brushstrokes will be sent about a week before the meeting. Please remember to send information regarding your activities to Jeanne Dutton for inclusion in the newsletter.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:45, at which time Jacki provided a unique approach to converting an abstract painting into a representational work, a technique which she learned at a workshop in Stonington, Maine. Thanks, Jacki!

Respectfully submitted,

Jeanne Ellen Dutton
Secretary, Bloomington Watercolor Society
