 President’s message
by Jeanne Dutton

Hello, Fellow Artists!

It's 2012 and your executive board has met to plan out the annual calendar.  It certainly looks to be a good and busy year, full of projects and fun activities, including paint outs and a workshop and, of course, the September conference at French Lick, We Paint...the Springs!

Thank you for trusting me to serve as your president.   I would like to acknowledge the officers and committee chairs, and thank them in advance for their hard work.

Kriste Lindberg, 1st Vice President
Betty Wagoner, 2nd Vice President
Carol Rhodes, Treasurer and Conference Co-Chair
Charlotte Griffin, Secretary
Deloris Schneider, Workshop Chair
Nancy Metz, "Brushstrokes" and Conference Chair
Tricia Wente, Show Chair and Historian
Cassidy Young, Program Chair
Jo Weddle, Hospitality Chair
Deborah Rush, Publicity

The committees also have members who volunteer their time and energy, and it's the dedication of your officers and committees that keep BWS the wonderful, vibrant organization it is.  Your support is gratefully accepted.

I wish you all a happy and prosperous - and FUN - new year.

Getting good values
Someone once said something like, “Values do all the work while color gets all the credit.”
During the program portion of this month’s meeting, Jan. 9, you’ll have a chance to test that premise. Bring your painting supplies, paper and one tube of paint (any color but yellow).
The January meeting is at 6 p.m. at First Christian Church on the corner of Kirkwood and Washington.

Still life drawing fundamentals
Review by Nancy Davis Metz
Over the winter break, I came across a great article on drawing cups, pitchers, vases and other dishes – all elements of many still life paintings. For the first time, I understood how to achieve symmetry and how to draw a believable ellipse.  The full article, “Constructing Vessels” by Sadi J. Valeri, appears in the January/February 2012 Artist’s Magazine. An abbreviated lesson on ellipses is available online at www.artistsnetwork.com/tamonlinetoc. Click on the January/February 2012 issue and then on the “Learn from Sadie Valeri’s detailed instruction on drawing the ellipse.”

If you want to recommend or review an article, book or dvd, please send a brief review (1-3 paragraphs) to nmetz@indiana.edu.
