Beyond BWS

May 14 BWS meeting program:
Painting Gesture in the Human Figure
Working from photos of people, Betty Wagoner will teach members to do simple sketches observing the skeletal position and direction of the gesture of people in action. Members  will do quick paintings of gesture, observing as well, how clothing helps to define a gesture. Bring a sketch pencil, sketching paper, watercolor paper, a few colors of paint, brushes and cup for water.
The monthly meeting starts at 6 p.m. with a brief business meeting. The location is First Christian Church at the corner of Kirkwood and Lincoln.

Art relief to Henryville
Soon after a tornado hit Henryville March 2, many people and agencies went to work to help.  BWS responded quickly and in a very appropriate manner – by collecting art supplies for the students of the Henryville Schools.
Amy Fischmer, the art teacher, provided a list of needed supplies.  The students, she said, had colored pencils, rulers, drawing pencils, and some paper.  Other than that, everything was on the Wish List.
After Kriste Lindberg’s presentation, Miah Michaelson and the City of Bloomington Arts Commission unanimously agreed to support the project, and the drive was on.  City Hall Atrium was provided as a drop-off point.  BAC sent a news release, so there was publicity in the Herald Times and other media.
BWS members, area artists, and art lovers were very generous,  and nearly everyone said to BWS: “Thank you!  I am so glad you are doing this!”
A Saturday morning was spent sorting the boxes and boxes of supplies and, on a sunny afternoon, Jeanne Dutton and Jo Weddle delivered a van-full of goods to the teacher and her happy students.  “It was just like Christmas!” Mrs. Fischmer reported, as the students unpacked the many paints, papers, brushes, inks, canvases, etc.
Many members jumped in and helped with the work, and many others brought art supplies and cash.  You know who you are, and your reward is the joy you can feel as you look at the smiles on the students’ faces.  Good job, BWS!

T.C. Steele Festival of Flowers Paint Out
The 13th annual event will take place Saturday, May 19, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Judging begins at 2 a.m., and awards will be announced at 3 p.m.
Artists who wish to be in the juried competition must register by May 14.  Complete details and a registration form can be found at http://www.tcsteele.org/. Cost is $10 per artist; $5 for artists 18 years and under.
You don't have to compete to paint, and you don't have to paint. Just come out and enjoy the day, wandering Selma Steele's beautiful gardens and viewing the artists at work.  Lunch boxes and drinks are available, and music is provided for your entertainment.
Note that BWS supports T.C. Steele by using this opportunity as our May paint out.

Beyond BWS
Atelier’s in Martinsville invites BWS members to a “Meet and Greet” of its new guest artists May 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. The address is 2655 Burton Lane, Martinsville, IN 46151. Wine and snacks will be served.
by Joseph Fettingis
The new artists whose work will be featured are Jan Gill and Lori Robinson.
Directions from Bloomington: Take SR 37 and before you get to Martinsville, just past Legendary Hills and right before the little Hillview Motel,  turn right. Take this road maybe less than 1/4 mile and then turn at next right, then immediately turn at next left (along fence of large home on corner). Follow this until you come to a green barn that says Atelier's on front in big gold letters.
Atelier’s is sponsoring a two-day watercolor workshop taught by Joseph Fettingis, NWS, July 27 and 28. One day will focus on landscape and the next will feature a portrait. The workshop offers a bonus field trip during which Fettingis will show participants the ins and outs of photography for artistic reference. Students may draw their subjects if they wish, but Fettingis provides a tracing so everyone has the same drawing and he can concentrate on teaching color and its application to his art.
The first day will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the second day will start at 9:30 a.m. but end at 3:30 p.m.  The workshop will be at the Art Sanctuary basement,  190 N. Sycamore St. in Martinsville The cost is $150 for both days; a non-refundable $75 deposit will hold a spot. The remaining $75 can be paid at the first class. Participants will need watercolor supplies and a sack lunch each day. Breakfast foods, some drinks and snacks will be provided.
